Gruha Jyothi Scheme Benefits

- APL & BPL Cards : Regardless of family income, ration card type, religion, and caste, all residents are equally eligible to receive free electricity, limited to up to 200 units under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme.
Gruha Jyothi Scheme 2024 Average Electricity Consumption Calculation (Revised)
As mentioned earlier, residents can consume electricity of up to 200 units, implying that not everyone can use the entire 200 units for free. The eligible units for each electricity meter will be calculated by determining the average monthly electricity units consumed over the last 12 months, and then an additional 10 units will be added. This total represents the maximum units that residents can consume to qualify for a zero electricity bill.
Now, let’s see an example to understand precisely how the government of Karnataka calculates the Average Electricity Consumption.
Sl.No | Month | Units Consumed (Monthly) |
1 | May 2022 | 95 |
2 | June 2022 | 88 |
3 | July 2022 | 112 |
4 | Aug 2022 | 185 |
5 | Sep 2022 | 62 |
6 | Oct 2022 | 135 |
7 | Nov 2022 | 156 |
8 | Dec 2022 | 99 |
9 | Jan 2023 | 166 |
10 | Feb 2023 | 175 |
11 | Mar 2023 | 152 |
12 | Apr 2023 | 180 |
Average units consumed : ( 95+88+112+185+62+135+156+99+166+175+152+180 ) / 12 = 133.75 Units (Avg)
Maximum units (consumable to get zero electricity bill) : ( 133.75 + {133.75*0.1} ) = 147.13 Units (Max)
Note: If the average units consumed are less than or equal to 50, an additional flat 10 units will be given instead of adding 10% of the average consumed units. (Example: If the average units consumed are 48, then the maximum units will be calculated as 48+10 = 58 Units)
How are Gruha Jyothi Units Calculated for New Meter Connections?
When a consumer moves into a newly built house or shifts to a new place, there is no prior electricity consumption record to calculate the average units for the Gruha Jyothi scheme. In such cases, the government allocates 50 units of free electricity per month, plus an additional 10%, bringing the total to approximately 55 free units per month.
If a consumer’s electricity consumption exceeds 55 units but stays under 200 units, they only need to pay for the units consumed beyond the given limit. After completing one year in the new house, the government will calculate the consumer’s actual average electricity consumption for the past 12 months, and this average will determine the free units provided under the Gruha Jyothi scheme for future months.

Hi Vignesh,
Could you pls advise how to register eb benefit scheme by linking aadhar card.
If I apply now , is it last 12 months average consumption of electricity bill is taken ? Or let me know what is the base months for average calculation of units.
Average consumed units from july-2022 to july-2023 will be considered.
In the June-2024 bill also the Average taken from year FY 2022-23 is considered.
Why ( consumed units from April-2023 to March-2024 (FY 2023-24) is not being
considered ?
Yes, My query also same. Why average consumed units considered only from July-2022 to July-2023 ? I completely reduced my consumptions during 2023-24 to below 180 units (eligible units), to get the benifits of the scheme. But we are not getting benifitted. This is not fair right.
I moved to my new house last year and I am allotted 58 units .whether I once again apply for new limit
It is 2024 but the avg consumption is still considered for FY 22-23. why is that? Previous tenant’s avg consumption is considered for my current bill so it doesn’t make sense. Please update the duration as soon as possible.
My average consumption in FY 22-23 was well below 200 so I availed Gruha Jyothi Scheme in my previous house, just a month back I have moved into another house. In this house previous tenant consumption for FY 22-23 was over 200 units. Now while applying Gruha Jyothi the system is considering house power consumption rather than our average consumption details.
This is confusing, as a family we are consuming less than 200 units, so when we change house bescom should consider our average power consumption and not the house power consumption
I have applied for this scheme last year on June. Should i need to renew the scheme again? If so, how to renew the scheme? Gruha jyoti subsidy is not getting reflected from past 4 months
There is no need to renew the Gruha Jyothi application. If you are not receiving the subsidy from last 4 months, please contact the concerned ESCOM office to find out the exact reason.
When Gruha jyothi scheme was lunched that time our electric meter new used, but now presently already finished 1 year I still get only 58 units free, please can you update to 200 units
